This is just a heartfelt thanks to all of you recent subscribers to Vintage Gay Books. I’m no longer doing new posts, but there’s a pretty solid body of writing there and I really enjoyed talking about these novels. My collection is way bigger than the sum total of books about which I wrote. I’m now writing a weekly newsletter called Maitland On Movies. I’ve been reviewing for decades and was a senior editor at TVGuide.com—I was brought on staff when it was a start-up; what a ride that was. I've been collecting for about 15 years now and am always on the lookout for new sources and dealers or collectors to exchange tips with. Was so excited to discover your newletter but then so disappointed to see that it was over. Oh well. LOL
Dane--Sorry! But thanks for responding and hope you at least enjoy reading the existing posts. As for buying, I imagine you're already familiar with Bolerium Books... not cheap, but also not outrageous. And I still check out eBay occasionally; most sellers these days are pretty savvy about price points but every once in a while you see something going for less than you'd expect. Of course, their algorithm also brings up titles by a children's-book author named Zhenya Gay...
I keep hoping I'll come across some hidden gem of a dealer but I guess there simply aren't that many of them out there. Back in the day, I had a great deal of luck on Abebooks ... I think I found all of my initial classic pulps there e.g. Caves of Iron, Sir Gay etc. Prices on eBay are certainly interesting. The range is incredible. If you're at all interested in seeing my collection, it's up on Insta under my handle here. (backinthedaygay) :) Thanks again!! Dane
Yes, his shop must be amazing. If I lived in SF I'd be a regular visitor as I'm betting that every single piece on my wishlist has crossed his desk at one time or another. Unfortunately, no online sales and although I've sent my wishlist a few times, I've only ever heard back once so I'm betting they just stick to in-person and don't really want to complicate things.
I asked him about setting up an online store, but he mentioned that he moves items much faster in person. His shop is incredible—I stopped by a few weeks ago and couldn’t resist picking up a few things.
SF is so huge that I don't doubt that for a second. He must be so well-known that I'm guessing his customer base is pretty huge. So many of us are now getting into the whole vintage gay ephemera thing ... and we've got money to spend so I bet he does very well. :) Really hope I make it down there one day. Thing is though, if you have a wishlist, you kinda need to be dropping by on a regular basis as stuff must come and go so quickly. Oh well. First "world problems". LOL I'm on insta if you wanted to see what I've managed to pick up so far. The collection has been a blast putting together but my crazy wishlist is growing instead of shrinking! Dane
